Reclaim the Future! National Youth Sunday 23 November 2008
Whenever we read a newspaper or watch the TV we are confronted with bad news about climate change and its effects - rising greenhouse gases and sea levels, unpredictable weather and increased poverty; the situation can often seem hopeless.
We know that we share some of the responsibility that comes from being part of a society that takes the environment for granted. But as Catholic Christians we also know that we have it within us, through prayer and action, to make a change for the benefit of all creation.
National Youth Sunday is on the Feast of Christ the King, 23 November 2008 and is an opportunity to celebrate the young people in our parish and school communities. This year we continue to think about God's call to livesimply by exploring the theme of sustainability.
Each year the Bishops' Conference produces a resource which helps to explore the themes chosen; Reclaim the Future! is an online resource which will help young people better understand their place in creation and their role in working for a better world.
At a time when hope seems harder to find, this resource will help young people come together to find hope in Christ's message and take action to bring hope to the world around them.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the work that you do in sharing your faith, helping young people to draw more deeply into their own faith, and helping them to take an active role in the life of our communities. The energy and enthusiasm of young people brings hope to the whole Church.
