National Youth Sunday 2008 :: Reclaim The Future

About Us

About NYS08

Young people have a unique part to play in the ongoing work for social and environmental justice. The passion and creativity of young people sustains the Church in her desire to make a positive impact on the world. NYS08 celebrates this contribution and encourages and enables young people to join together, recognising their role in making a better future for us all.

NYS08 encourages young people to look hard at their lifestyles and choose to live sustainably. While we all share responsibility for the damage society does, we also share in the possibility of change. Living sustainably as Christian Catholics, we’re called to acknowledge our sense of community and interdependence: our relationship with other people and the world around us helps us to understand that we can become who God wants us to be.

By changing how young people see themselves and the world, they can bring their vibrancy and energy to the work of making a better future - for ourselves, for each other, for the world. We can do it if we do it together. A better world is possible; we can Reclaim the future!

About Us

The Bishops' Conference of England and Wales
is the permanent assembly of Catholic bishops in these two countries. It is an expression of the collegiality of the bishops. Through it they proclaim the Gospel to the people of England and Wales.

Young people are the Church of today as well as tomorrow. Youth ministry is a priority for the Bishops' Conference. We do this in two ways: by offering resources, suggestions and guidance to those working for the Church in youth work and by signposting young people (13-18 years old) and young adults (18-35) to resources that aim to enrich and deepen their faith.

The livesimply project is based on a radical idea: that God calls us to live simply.

We are asked to look hard at our lifestyles, and to choose to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with the poor.

It's not just about money. It's a challenge to reflect, celebrate and take action in order to work for justice, and to be happier in ourselves as a result. It's about seeking what we need rather than grasping for more, sharing not hoarding.

"You are not making a gift of what is yours to the poor, but you are giving them back what is theirs… The earth belongs to everyone, not to the rich." St Ambrose
